Funding Policies

MZHF Funding Policies

MZHF grant funds may be used for reasonable and necessary expenses directly related to the implementation of the approved project, program, research initiative, or community partnership, including personnel, program expenses, supplies, technology, data and evaluation support, and project-specific equipment.

All expenses must be clearly justified and aligned with project goals.

MZHF generally does not fund:

  • Indirect costs, facilities and administrative (F&A) charges, departmental overhead, or institutional assessments
  • New construction, major renovations, or permanent facility improvements
  • Routine operating expenses or activities that would ordinarily be supported through existing institutional or organizational budgets
  • Permanent staffing commitments without a sustainability plan
  • Expenses incurred prior to grant approval
  • Political activities, lobbying, or partisan efforts
  • Religious worship, religious instruction, or proselytization

Significant changes to project scope, leadership, timeline, or budget allocations greater than 20% require prior written approval from MZHF.

New construction, major renovations, permanent facility upgrades or large infrastructure projects are not permitted. Any equipment must directly tie to the proposed program and be necessary to achieve project goals. Please include a clear justification and demonstrate why existing institutional resources are insufficient

Recipients may request a one-time, no-cost extension of up to 12 months when additional time is needed to complete the originally approved scope of work. Requests must be submitted within the portal before the grant end date and include a brief explanation, remaining balance, and revised timeline.

Repeat applicants are welcome; however, funding is competitive and not automatic. Applicants seeking additional support should demonstrate responsible stewardship of prior funding, measurable impact, continued need, and progress toward sustainability.

All recipients are required to submit interim and/or final reports as outlined in their award agreement. Failure to meet reporting requirements may affect eligibility for future funding.
